Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Judi Barrett, Ronald W. Barrett (1978), Scholastic Book Services

Sitting around the breakfast table, a Grandpa is inspired to tell his grandchildren about the mythical town of Chewandswallow. In Chewandswallow, the townspeople live similarly to everyone else, except for one small thing: all of their food comes from the sky, already cooked, three times a day. However, things take a turn for the worse when the food starts coming in odd combinations and gigantic sizes, at all hours of the day! Ultimately, the townspeople are forced to leave in boats made out of bread in order to make a new life for themselves.

Talk with a child about this book

Do you think the story the grandpa told his grandchildren was true or made up? Why do you think that?

Would you like to live in the town of Chewandswallow? Why or why not?

How do you think the townspeople felt when the weather took a turn for the worse in their town?

The townspeople stayed until they felt like they absolutely couldn’t anymore. Do you think they should have left sooner, or stuck it out even longer in Chewandswallow?

How did the townspeople show their ability to problem-solve and adapt to their bad situation?

The book showed rafts made out of bread, peanut butter, and cheese. If you had giant food to built with, what would you make and how would you do it?
