Miss Rumphius

Barbara Cooney (1985), Puffin Books

When Alice Rumphius is a child she tells her grandfather that she wants to travel to distant places and to come home and live by the sea.  He tells her that there is a third, more important thing she must also do: make the world more beautiful than when she found it. Alice does travel to many exciting places and then comes home to live by the sea.  As a grown woman she finally finds a way to fulfill her third job of making the world a more beautiful place and gives the same mandate to her niece.
